Jacob Mercer signs five years of indentured servitude to save his family. The contract is the smallest thing he signed away.

Chapters

Jacob Mercer signs five years away under a banner that reads STABILITY THROUGH CONTRIBUTION. The clothes come off before the welcome speech is done.

A box, a card, a collar. Between the camera and the cattle prod, the body learns what the contract actually means.

A woman's heat in a dream, then a stadium under hard sun. Jacob meets a slave whose stillness shouldn't look like rest, but does.

Praise lands lower than it should. The drill is verbal, the lesson is somewhere else, and the body is faster than the mind that owns it.

Two seconds of eye contact. A medical station with half-walls that block sight but not sound. The shell is standard issue.
